A possum box — also called a possum nesting box or possum house — is a purpose-built timber cavity designed to replicate a tree hollow. It gives urban possums a safe, weatherproof, elevated den as an alternative to your roof cavity. Possum boxes are approved and recommended by wildlife authorities in NSW, VIC, QLD, and WA as the most effective method of humane possum relocation.
Urban development across Australian cities has eliminated the vast majority of hollow-bearing trees that brushtail possums rely on as natural dens. In suburbs like Sydney's Inner West, Melbourne's inner east, Brisbane's southside, and Perth's northern corridor, there are virtually no natural tree hollows left — which is exactly why possums move into roofs. A possum box directly solves this problem.
When a possum box is installed in the right tree at the right height, within the possum's established home range, the possum will almost always adopt it as its permanent den within days — completely eliminating the motivation to re-enter your roof. It is the most effective single measure for long-term possum-roof conflict prevention.

Why It Matters
Possum removal without providing an alternative den is like evicting someone from their home without any alternative. Without a possum box, the possum has nowhere to go — and your roof is the most obvious option.
In NSW and several other states, wildlife authorities recommend or require that a suitable alternative den be provided as part of any possum removal. Our possum box installation meets all state wildlife authority guidelines.
A possum with a warm, safe, elevated box in a familiar tree has no reason to attempt re-entry into your roof. Studies show possum box installation reduces re-entry attempts by over 80% compared to removal without alternative habitat.
Urban brushtail and ringtail populations are under pressure from habitat loss. Possum boxes directly replace lost tree hollows, supporting local possum populations without conflict with homeowners.
Removal alone stops today's problem. Proofing stops re-entry. A possum box stops the motivation to attempt re-entry. All three together create a permanent, comprehensive resolution that our competitors don't offer as standard.
Female possums often carry joeys in their pouch or on their back. A properly positioned possum box near the removal site ensures a joey-carrying mother has immediate shelter after release — a critical animal welfare consideration.
Healthy urban possum populations are important to Australian urban ecology — they pollinate native plants and support local food chains. Coexisting with possums through proper habitat provision benefits both wildlife and homeowners.

Step by Step
Possum box installation is more than nailing a box to a tree. Correct placement, height, orientation, and site selection are all critical to adoption success.
Our technician assesses your garden and surrounding trees to identify the optimal installation site. We select the correct box size for the possum species involved — brushtail boxes are larger (entrance hole 120mm) than ringtail boxes (entrance hole 70mm).
We select the most suitable tree on or near your property — ideally a large, established tree at least 3–4 metres high, preferably higher. The box must be in the possum's established home range (within 50–150 metres of capture point).
The entrance hole faces away from prevailing weather to prevent rain ingress. The box is positioned to avoid full afternoon sun in warmer climates (Sydney, Brisbane, Perth) but to capture morning sun in colder climates (Melbourne, highland areas).
The box is mounted using a tree-safe strapping system that does not harm the host tree — no nails or screws through living bark. For multi-storey installations, we use appropriate access equipment.
We place the possum's own nesting material inside the box where possible (taken from its former roof nest) — this scent marking dramatically accelerates adoption. Fresh fruit or native leaf attractant is placed near the entrance for the first few days.

We use government-approved possum box designs that meet the species-specific size and material requirements recommended by wildlife authorities across NSW, VIC, QLD, and WA.
12–19mm Untreated Hardwood Timber
Thick timber walls provide insulation and durability. Untreated — no toxic chemicals near the possum or its young.
Brushtail Box (Large)
Internal dimensions: ~400mm H × 250mm W × 250mm D. Entrance hole: 120mm diameter. Suitable for common brushtail and mountain brushtail possums.
Ringtail Box (Small)
Internal dimensions: ~250mm H × 200mm W × 200mm D. Entrance hole: 70mm diameter. Suitable for common ringtail possums.
Hinged Inspection Lid
A hinged or screwed lid allows annual cleaning and inspection of the box interior — essential for long-term maintenance.
Weatherproof Roof Overhang
Box roof overhangs the entrance by 50mm+ to prevent rain entry into the cavity — critical for possum comfort and box adoption.
Tree-Safe Strapping System
The box is attached using wide nylon or rubber strapping that does not constrict or damage the host tree — meeting arboricultural best practice.
We install possum boxes across all four major Australian cities — tailoring the box specification and placement to local possum species and urban tree availability.

Not all possum box installations are equal. The wrong box, wrong tree, or wrong height means the possum won't adopt it — and your roof remains at risk.
Our technicians are trained in possum behaviour and den selection criteria — so the box is placed where the possum will actually use it, not just where it's convenient.
Every box we install meets the exact specifications recommended by wildlife authorities in NSW, VIC, QLD, and WA. No cheap flat-pack boxes or undersized designs.
We use wide strapping systems that protect the host tree. No screws or nails through living bark. Arboricultural best practice throughout.
Possum box installation is available as a standalone service or as an add-on to any possum removal and proofing job — at a discounted combined rate.
We provide a written record of box location, species target, installation height, and orientation — useful for future maintenance and for demonstrating wildlife compliance to building managers or bodies corporate.
At 2–3 weeks post-installation, we offer a follow-up visit to confirm adoption and adjust attractant or placement if needed — ensuring the investment works.
Give your resident possum a safe, legal alternative home — and protect your roof permanently. Our possum box installations are approved by wildlife authorities and professionally placed for maximum adoption success.
